On the line-up of treats this time, there’s the award-winning Finnish soulster Tuomo, championed by Gilles Peterson and Straight No Chaser Magazine. Then expect no holds barred, action packed, soul, northern and funk from the lady behind G-Spot Events, Corrina Greyson. And, only revealed at show-time, a very special guest soul star from the USA!

Your host for the night is the unstoppable cabaret showcase multi-talent, Lenny Beige, described by Phil Jupitus as “The greatest entertainer working in the country today”.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are coming back to London for a spot at the Roundhouse, Camden. If for some reason you have not witnessed Sharon’s powerhouse vocals front the tight unit that is the Dap-Kings, then I guess you ain’t seen nothing yet. At the top of the international funk & soul scene, the Brooklyn based band will be performing tracks from their growing catalogue of soul classics, including new material from their album, “I Learned The Hard Way”, already a bonafide soul classic sitting proudly in the collections of music lovers worldwide. Recorded at Daptone’s House Of Soul, it is an album of love-laboured warmth and authenticity that could just as easily been recorded at Stax in the late 60′s. On-stage the Dap-Kings put on a dynamic show of tight rhythm and impressive showmanship. Yes its on a Wednesday but trust me, there will be no nodding off in the Roundhouse on this night.

As big fans of Mr Lee Fields, we are so pleased to hear of his return to the London stage. Ok so it was only February that he was last here but it was some eight years prior to that that he last made an appearance over here. Well known for a slew of deep funk singles and a killer album from the late seventies, the North Carolina born-and-raised soul singer enjoyed a career revival in the late nineties when Philip Lehman and Gabriel Roth at Desco Records tracked him down and recorded a new album, “Let’s Get A Groove On”, much to the delight of enthusiasts. A second, equally heavy album, “Problems” later appeared on Soul Fire Records and Fields has been recording sporadically ever since.

Over a period of three years, Truth & Soul Records, fronted by Leon Michels and Jeff Silverman recorded a handful of new singles with Lee that took him in a new direction. Finally garnering enough material for an entire album “My World” in 2009, it actually sounds like a suite of songs designed to flow into each other and not a collection of sporadic recordings spanning three years. With an overall summery vibe that certainly benefits from its roots in the Brooklyn music scene, the new record is sometimes straight-talking grit but mostly shows the sweeter soul side of Mr. Fields. The result is arguably the finest Lee Fields album ever and high praise goes to Michels, Silverman and the musicians involved for crafting such a beautiful, modern take on soul.

So don’t miss this show then, as this might well be your only chance to hear Lee perform these songs live.

There will also be two live sets from Brooklyn’s Out Of Pockets, playing funk, afrobeat & soul with back to back dance floor tunes in between and until 4am. Wednesday April 14th 2010 – an important date for soul and funk fans. Following the April 6th release of their hotly anticipated album “I Learned the Hard Way”, the mighty Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings will be playing Koko in Camden for what is their only announced UK date thus far and is likely to be for a while. So a warning then, as this show will sell-out. I have my ticket, have you got yours yet?

Produced on eight-track tape by Gabriel Roth at Brooklyn’s House of Soul studios the new album is promising a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. They are without doubt one of the very finest soul and funk acts around today. So, if you have already experienced them live or not, I highly recommend you get to this show.

Not since the early days of Desco have we been looking forward to such an exciting double bill of genuine funk and soul. Get ready, its-a-coming on Friday 5th February!!

Brooklyn record labels Dunham Records and Truth & Soul are regular collaborators and offshoots of Daptone Records and it’s earlier incarnation, Desco – one big, creative, extended family.

Lee Fields should need no introduction to funk fans but in case you are yet to hear it, his 2009 album with The Expressions “My World”, released on Truth & Soul is a masterpiece of soul – beautifully orchestrated and heart-felt, Lee’s raw vocals ride a blissful summer city sound over topics dealing with life, love and social issues. It is quite simply one of the best albums of the last decade in our opinion and my personal favourite album of last year.

Support comes from the Menahan Street Band – comprised of members of the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, The Budos Band and Antibalas and raw soul funk vocals from Charles Bradley, his first appearance in the UK!! All this, set in London’s incredible Art Deco venue, Bloomsbury ballroom. True soul excitement!!!

Our mate Corrina Greyson has teamed up with the Haggis Horns for a show at the Jazz Cafe this Saturday 16th January. Corrina’s raw soul vocals will go mighty well with the Haggis Horns punchy funk and also to hand, will be DJ Guy Hennigan spinning Northern Soul.

Whilst we’re here, I’d really like to recommend the single Corrina did with Amsterdam’s Lefties Soul Connection, entitled “You Don’t Know” b/w “Cover My Eyes”, its a real groover.

What’s that? Who is Gizelle Smith, I hear you ask? Well, originally from South London, Miss Smith has now relocated to Hamburg where she is making beautiful music with The Mighty Mocambos. Together they have released an album that was released last year on the Record Kicks label.

Thursday 28th January at the Spice of Life, 6 Moor Street, Soho is our first opportunity to catch them live and should prove to be an intimate gig. Nice to see a new soul / funk band on the scene.
